Sampaguita Basketball did not succeed in trying to win the First Sunday’s Club Basketball League with its final match against Brayt Pepols. Despite suffering their first loss to Brayt Pepol’s in September, Team Sampaguita still had a fantastic season with 4-1 standings.
For this game, the Brayt Pepol team’s starting lineup included Morados, Roxas, Pabroquiz, Lubguban, Mutya and with their reserve line up, Burlaos, Mutya#2, Black, Cariño, and Embang. Brayt Pepols is a peer group at St. Peters College here in Iligan City that loves to play basketball. The Sampaguita team was led by Larry Iligan, Geo Laturza, Arturo Abonales, Sean Matthew Montes, Albert Calumpang.
In the first quarter, Sampaguita Basketball was topped by the Brayt Pepols Dou Daryl Morados and Charlie Mutya to help the team boost their confidence to play their last game of the season. The second and the third quarter of the game featured great team planning from the Brayt Pepols outscoring Sampaguita twice with double digits. Daryl Morados and the younger Mutya led the team with a couple easy basket runs to take the largest lead of the night.
In the final quarter, the Sampaguita team tried to mount a comeback. Chito Manatad was the team’s late-running leader to help cut the lead into a single-point.The top three performers for the team Sampaguita were Chito Manatad with 18 points. Larry Iligan with 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and Albert Calumpang contributed 8 points in the game. Sampaguita failed to finish their late run as Jonar Etom took over in the final minute of the game forcing Sampaguita to commit two crucial turnovers and convert into two clutch basket. Brayt Pepols claim the First Sunday’s Club Basketball League champion with a final score of 67 to 61.
Morados secured 18 points and grabbed 6 Rebounds and Charlie Mutya added 18 points and 3 rebounds with 4 assists. It was a team effort for the Brayt Pepol’s, who won their seventh straight in a row to finish the season. Daryl Morados was name the Season and Finals MVP.
